Victorian Amateur Championship
Stacey Keating has taken the Victorian Amateur Championship for a Second Time.
Stacey Keating of Victoria Golf Club has taken the title of Victorian Amateur Champion for 2010. Keating who took the prestigious title in 2006 showed a flawless game of golf on Friday having eight birdies in the morning 18 round, to put her 4 holes in front of fellow competitor Jo Charlton (Metropolitan) at the completion of round one.
In what can only be stated as a high class match, the two finalists started at the first tee on the west course, early Friday morning teeing off at 7.30am. Jo Charlton from Metropolitan Golf Club played a worthy match for any golfer, holding the lead until the 11th hole in round one a score which can be attributed to some amazing putts from the edge of the green. Charlton who made the qualifying round in 15th position came out strong early in the match and displayed an eye for reading the position of the pins and a drive to make any amateur golfer envious.
Stacey Keating recovered from her slow start to produce eight birdies late in the first round to take the lead at the completion of the first 18 holes 4 up. Displaying accurate approach shots to the green Keating leaved little room for error and was well in contention to claim another Amateur Championship title. The two finalists had a break just before midday to re-energize before heading back onto the west course for another round in front of a number of spectators.
With fellow competitors looking on with interest the two women started making their way around the course yet again with the lead never extending beyond 4 holes. Charlton managed to reduce the lead on a number of occasions however Keating who displayed an amazing round of golf against Tilly Poulsen in the semi-finals, was able to maintain her lead over Charlton and win the 36 hole round 4/3.
At the presentations Jo Charlton gave a humble speech of thanks and support to winner Stacey Keating praising her skills and talent on the golf course. Keating who maintained consistency throughout the tournament was very modest in receiving her award and attributed part of her success to having last year's winner’s caddie.
Congratulations once more to Stacey Keating for her success and to Jo Charlton for making the finals, a remarkable feat in itself. Well done to all players who participated in the Victorian Amateur your participation it greatly appreciated. Special thanks to the spectators, caddies and parents present throughout the tournament and to Royal Melbourne Golf Club for hosting the six day tournament.

Semi-Finalists Shine at Royal Melbourne
Today Royal Melbourne Golf Club hosted the semi-finals of the Victorian Amateur Championship. Jo Charlton (Metropolitan), Su Hyun Oh (Kingswood), Stacey Keating (Victoria) and Tilly Poulsen (Kingston Heath) arrived at the club in the early hours of the morning to squeeze in some practice prior to the start of their 18 holes matchplay on the east course.
Charlton who finished in 15th position after the qualifying rounds played against Su Oh who had an aggregate score of 150 leading into the first knockout matchplay round. Oh who had being putting brilliantly for the entire tournament had some difficulty after the turn, providing Charlton with the perfect opportunity to take a one shot lead. Charlton played flawlessly all day, sinking putts from 2-3 meters away with the greatest of ease and pleasing the small gathering of spectators that faithfully followed the players throughout the 18 holes. Charlton headed to the 17th one hole up on Oh, and whilst both girls had their balls well placed on the green Oh was unable to sink the putt to even the score and continue on to the 18th, Charlton taking the match 2/1.
The second match between Tilly Pouslen and Stacey Keating, proceeded behind the first pair in heavy drizzle. Keating took the lead early and by the time the players had passed the turn the Keating was 3 up. Poulsen continued her excellent form during the semi-final round, consistantly driving the ball down the fairways and navigating the tricky placed pins. A few missed putts however cost her dearly and unfortunately she was unable to make up the difference. Keating who had performed with impeccable accuracy all day finished the match 3/1.
Tomorrow Jo Charlton and Stacey Keating will play the final of the Victorian Amateur Championship consisting of two 18-hole rounds on the west course. Good luck to both finalists for the day and well done to both Poulsen and Oh for reaching the semi-finals.

Poulsen (Kingston Heath GC) are thefourremaining players in the competition afterproceeding throughthe first two rounds of the knockout matchplay.
With the first pair teeing off at 7.30am this morning the playersbegan along the east course once again. With only a mild breeze to contend with, the sixteen qualifying players were able to hit the fairways with minimal difficulty. As the women had already played the east courseduring round two of the championship, they had a better understanding of the layout of the course and the hazards that layahead ofthem.
With twelve o'clock fast approaching the first scores of the day came in with M. Hui, who had lead the field after the completion of round two, being defeated by J. Charlton 5/4.In quick succession the next seven pairs came off the course with E. Orr (Commonwealth) 5/4; S. Oh (Kingswood) 4/3;J. Soo (Woodlands) 3/2; A. Orchard (Surfer Paradise) 1 Up; S. Keating (Victoria) 5/3, F. In-Albon (Manly) 1Up and T. Poulsen (Kingston Heath) 2/1 reporting a win.
Those fortunate enough to acquire a win proceded to the quarter finals and after having a quick lunch break, found themselves addressing the ball on the 1st tee of the east course once more. The eight remaining players displayed amazing talent on the fairways hitting incredibly long drives and sinking long putts to challenging pin placements. Unfortunately the field had to be narrowed with Charlton (2/1), Oh (1Up), Keating (6/5) and Poulsen (2/1) finishing with the win.
The remaining four players now progress to the semi-finalsto be played tomorrow morning alongside the first round of the Victorian Salver. Well done to all players in the Amateur Championship and good luck to the remaining four for tomorrow.

Hui Leads 16 Strong Field into Knockout Qualifier
Michelle Hui from Sorrento Golf Club is currently leading the field after completion of round two at Royal Melbourne Golf Club. Hui who finished on 146 gross score, maintained consistency throughout round one and two with daily scores of 73-70.
The players tried their luck on the East course today under favourable weather conditions. The 18 hole round was completed with ease with many commenting that the length of the east course compared to the west had been beneficial to their playing capabilities. There were some fantastic putts taken from the edge of the green on more than one occasion for the fortunate players and many recording a birdie.
As the nerves had settled from the previous days, some lower scores came through. Hui whilst leading the sixteen players through to the matchplay knockout round was closely followed by Justine Lee (The Australian) who finished on 147. The remaining top five players from round one and two were all in quick succession of one another leaving the spectators still guessing as to who would walk away with the coveted championship title.
Tomorrow the top sixteen players who recorded the lowest combined gross score from round one and two will participate in the knockout matchplay, with the winners of each round proceeding to the next until only two players remain. The final will be played on the Friday in conjunction with round two of the Victorian Salver and consist of two 18 hole rounds.
Congratulations to all players who attended the championship your contribution to the event and the game of golf is invaluable. Special thanks to the staff at Royal Melbourne golf club who continue to provide assistance and the committee members for ensuring everything runs smoothly.

Glasby Leads Field for Amateur Championship
Ipswich's Susan Glasby is currently leading the field for the Victorian Amateur Championships after starting strongly with a 18 hole score of 70. Glasby is quickly followed by Grace Lennon (Heidelberg) sitting on 72, whilst Michelle Hui (Sorrento) and Courtney Massey (Southport) are currently holding equal third on 73.
Hosted at the prestigious Royal Melbourne Golf Club the 56 strong field began teeing off at 8.00am this morning underneath a grey and cloudy skyline. Thankfully the women did not have to experience yesterday's harsh weather and began smoothly. Whilst some players took a while to settle on the fairways, the majority of players came out strongly.
The west course provided a number of challenges for the competing women with many finding on more than one occasion the use of their sand wedge. In the early afternoon the scores started to come in and it could be seen that a fight for the top 16 qualifying positions was underway. The top five players for the round are all within one stroke of each other with the remaining field hot on their heels.
Tomorrow the women will take on the east course at the club, in which at the conclusion of play, the best 16 scores will proceed to the first qualifying round held on the Wednesday.
With a number of caddies and a handful of spectators watching on round one of the Victorian Amateur was highly enjoyable with plays playing very competitive golf whilst still maintaining a fun and social environment. Please see below for full field results and leading nett players.
