Victorian 72 Hole Strokeplay Championship

2010 Victorian 72 Hole Strokeplay Championship

The Victorian 72 Hole Strokeplay Championships is one of WGV's biggest tournaments in the Calender year, with competitors across the country descending onto the golf course to battle it out for the title. Playing four consecutive stroke rounds, the Championship attracts a first-class field and this year was no exception. With a talent pool of 67 competitors, the field included players from interstate, the Golf Australia National Squad, the China Elite Squad and members from within the state. Hosting the four day tournament this year was Keysborough Golf Club.

Under what can only be described as near-perfect weather, the first day began with ease, with all competitors settling in nicely, and some fantastic strokes being exhibited on course. Round one completed, it was evident that a battle was on hand, with nearly half the field within ten strokes of the leader, Jessica Speechly (Lake Karrnyup) on 71.

Day two proved just as exciting, with Breanna Elliott (Yarrawonga/Border) finishing on top for Best Gross Score for the second round and setting the new club record of 69. A 36 hole count of 145 placed Young Jin Chi (Sandhurst) and Ebony Heard (Kooyonga) in the lead, with the rest of the field hot their tail, one stroke the difference between the top five on the leader board.

Round Three saw the field reduce to only the top 36 competitors. The struggle for top score continued with the girls producing some magnificent shots on the green. Stacey Keating (Victoria) finished on top for best score of the day and also set a new course record of 68. The 54 hole count showed that three competitors were beginning to break away from the main group, with Keating, Heard and Lee holding top places respectively, and separated by only one stroke each way.

The final day proved to be an exciting one, with all players displaying great enthusiasm and skill. However, when the final scores were tallied, Keating with a handicap of +2 took the title of Victorian 72 Hole Strokeplay Champion with a score of 285. Runner-up was taken by Justine Lee (+2) with a score of 286.  Congratulations to the girls and all prize winners for a sensational tournament.

Special thanks to Keysborough Golf Club, Ellie Stawell, Helen Brown, Rosaleen Williams and Club Captain Maggie Cripps for all their help at the tournament.

About

Played over four consecutive stroke rounds, the Victorian 72 Hole Strokeplay Championship attracts a first class field, with entrants for the 2008 event held at Kingswood GC coming from the Golf Australia National Squad, Australian Institute of Sport, the Philippines, New Zealand, and Interstate. The event forms part of the Golf Australia Karrie Webb Series as a National Ranking event for Australia's leading female golfers. It is also an important event in WGV's Averages and Ranking calendar.

Open to amateur players who hold a handicap at an affiliated club not exceeding twelve (12) at the date of entry. Female professional golfers may also enter but are ineligible to receive prizes designated for amateur competitors.

WGV structure this event similarly to the Australian Women's Open with Rounds 1 and 2 played in threes, and following a cut, Rounds 3 and 4 played in two's.

The Victorian 72 Hole Strokeplay Championship was first played in 1964. The tournament was named The Nell Smithett 72 Hole Strokeplay in memory of Mrs. W.H. Smithett, member of the Victorian Ladies Golf Union Council and scratch score committee for many years in addition to being Handicap Manager from 1949-1954.
