Courtney Massey claims Nell Smithett Cup
The Victorian 72 Hole Strokeplay Championships played at Heidelberg Golf Club saw some of the best Australian Amateurs competing with ages as low as 12 years old and handicaps as low as +4. The golf course was in superb condition and with undulating greens and slopey fairways, it presented a true test for the players.
The overall winner, Courtney Massey was off to a great start from day 1 and shot 70 (4 under), the lowest round over the 4 days. Her strong performance continued for the rest of the tournament and while players like Grace Lennon, Jessica Speechley and Su-Hyun Oh were on her tail, they ended up coming short by few shots. Courtney finished the championship 3 shots clear of Jessica with a total of 293 strokes. A couple of young players, Emily Smith and Kymlin Thach played close to their handicaps making them winners too. Emily won best nett after 36 holes for handicaps between 7-12 while Kym won best overall nett.

About
Played over four consecutive stroke rounds, the Victorian 72 Hole Strokeplay Championship attracts a first class field, with entrants for the 2008 event held at Kingswood GC coming from the Golf Australia National Squad, Australian Institute of Sport, the Philippines, New Zealand, and Interstate. The event forms part of the Golf Australia Karrie Webb Series as a National Ranking event for Australia's leading female golfers. It is also an important event in WGV's Averages and Ranking calendar.
Open to amateur players who hold a handicap at an affiliated club not exceeding twelve (12) at the date of entry. Female professional golfers may also enter but are ineligible to receive prizes designated for amateur competitors.
WGV structure this event similarly to the Australian Women's Open with Rounds 1 and 2 played in threes, and following a cut, Rounds 3 and 4 played in two's.
The Victorian 72 Hole Strokeplay Championship was first played in 1964. The tournament was named The Nell Smithett 72 Hole Strokeplay in memory of Mrs. W.H. Smithett, member of the Victorian Ladies Golf Union Council and scratch score committee for many years in addition to being Handicap Manager from 1949-1954.
