Kay Mahlook Shield

2010 KM Shield - Results

The Kay Mahlook Shield is a district team's event held annually in the Bendigo District at Eaglehawk, Neangar Park and Marong Golf Clubs. This year 12 teams entered the event with four teams participating in each of the three Divisions.

East Gippsland took out the title for Division 1 for the second year in a row! Division 2 was won by West Gippsland and Division 3 was taken out by Goulburn Valley 2.

The three clubs presented beautifully prepared courses for the event and welcomed the girls with open arms.

All girls participated to their best ability and well done to the girls who had never experienced match play prior to the event.

The courses provided a challenge for the girls, in particular Marong Golf Club (Sandscrapes). Many girls have never had the experience of playing a sandscrapes course and since many only play them once a year this created new challenges for all players.

Congratulations to all participants and their team managers who enable the girls to attend.

Women's Golf Victoria would like to thank Eaglehawk, Neangar Park and Marong Golf Clubs for their continued support and hospitality, making this event possible for juniors around the state.

WGV would also like to thank the Bendigo District and the captains, presidents and committee members for giving their time and for assisting in the successful delivery of the 2010 event.

Please note if there are any junior girls that have miss placed a 9 iron from the Kay Mahlook Shield please contact Louise Pellegrino on 9524 7603.

About

In 1987 two very committed people sharing a vision for junior golf, Lorna Steel (Rossdale Golf Club) and Robyn Caine (Eastwood Golf Club) responded to the growing needs of junior girls in their districts. A Challenge Match between the two districts ensued, using a unique matchplay format.

From these humble beginnings the Kay Mahlook Shield has evolved to become a major event on the State Junior Calendar. The Shield has operated under various formats since 1987 and in recent years has been held in the Bendigo District over three days during the April school holiday period. Districts enter teams of three players who compete in a handicap matchplay format, which provides many interesting contests between the players. In 2000 a record twenty-six (26) teams entered the event.

The Eaglehawk Golf Club has embraced the concept of this event and has been hosting the finals since 1989, extending hospitality and friendship to the WGV representatives, players, team officials, and spectators alike.

The event was named after Ms. Kay Mahlook in recognition of her outstanding contribution to junior golf over many years, both as Executive Director of Women's Golf Victoria and Chair of the Junior Golf Committee. The fundamental aim of the Shield has always been to create and foster positive participation opportunities for girls throughout Victoria.
