About
In 1987 two very committed people sharing a vision for junior golf, Lorna Steel (Rossdale Golf Club) and Robyn Caine (Eastwood Golf Club) responded to the growing needs of junior girls in their districts. A Challenge Match between the two districts ensued, using a unique matchplay format.
From these humble beginnings the Kay Mahlook Shield has evolved to become a major event on the State Junior Calendar. The Shield has operated under various formats since 1987 and in recent years has been held in the Bendigo District over three days during the April school holiday period. Districts enter teams of three players who compete in a handicap matchplay format, which provides many interesting contests between the players. In 2000 a record twenty-six (26) teams entered the event.
The Eaglehawk Golf Club has embraced the concept of this event and has been hosting the finals since 1989, extending hospitality and friendship to the WGV representatives, players, team officials, and spectators alike.
The event was named after Ms. Kay Mahlook in recognition of her outstanding contribution to junior golf over many years, both as Executive Director of Women's Golf Victoria and Chair of the Junior Golf Committee. The fundamental aim of the Shield has always been to create and foster positive participation opportunities for girls throughout Victoria.
