About

The Cudmore Cheney Challenge (Border Challenge Matches) for junior girls were first played in 1967 at the Naracoorte Golf Course following a challenge from Mrs Mary Cudmore of South Australia to Victoria's, Miss Burtta Cheney M.B.E.. Both ladies, outstanding golfers in their own right were nurturing a wealth of junior talent in their respective states. Miss Cheney conducted the first junior girls golf camp at Anglesea in Victoria to assist in selecting her team.

In the inaugural 'Challenge Matches', each team comprised five (5) players U21 years of age. South Australia won the inaugural matches 5/2. The original competition was an outstanding success and was repeated the following year at Horsham Golf Club in Victoria. Teams were increased to six (6) players and on this occasion the result was much closer, with the Victorian team eventually winning 5/4. Two girls in the original Victorian Team later went on to have course records and eventually turned professional: Penny Pulz and Sandra McCaw (nee Williams).

Teams still comprise six (6) players although girls must now be U18 years of age. The competition involves both singles and foursomes handicap matchplay and is held at a Border Club in South Australia and Victoria each alternate year. In Victoria, the Western District has hosted the matches on twelve(12) occasions and the Wimmera District four(4).

The Border Matches have proved a wonderful training ground for promising young golfers for over thirty years. Names such as Jane Crafter, Anne-Maree Knight, Kate MacIntosh, Jane Lock all appear in the record books of the event in years gone by. Many representatives from these teams have gone on to win numerous State and National titles. In total the Border Matches have produced twelve (12) Australian Amateur Championships, seventeen (17) Victorian Amateur Championships, thirteen (13) South Australian Amateur Championships and two (2) NSW Amateur Championships. Jane Crafter, the former Australian Open Champion was a member of the South Australian Border Team in 1971, 1972 and 1973.
