Country Tournament - Spring
2011 Results
Day 2
Sandy Stewart form Portland GC has always been a great supporter of women's tournaments making many friends around the state along the way. Winning a big state tournament was always in her sights so the pressure was on today after having a strong opening round. Things didn't go quite as planned for Sandy - her golf was not as sharp and she had a tough player with a lot of local knowledge on her heels – Vicki Carnie from Curlewis GC- as well as Dot Christie from Meenyan GC whi was having a good day on teh course. In the end, it all came to a putt Sandy had to sink on the 18'th hole to avoid a playoff. Being used to high competition sport she managed to do it and claimed the trophy by one shot. Well done Sandy!
The Vi Teesdale trophy went to Di Buchannan from Royal Melbourne GC after having a steady couple of days under quite unsettled weather conditions. Di took won the trophy with a 150 nett over the 2 days. A well-deserved win since this 36 holes best nett trophy is really for any of the 340 players to grab!
While all this action was taking place at Barwon Heads, the C & D division players were having their own adventures at Lonsdale. One of the highlights of the day was Judy Bacon's hole in one on the 10th hole. There was a celebration when, after everyone was considering giving up looking for the ball to speed up play, a playing partner came across her ball at the bottom of the cup - she was about to tap her own in while the other ones were still looking! Congratulations Judy on an unforgettable achievement!
In Division C, Huntingdale member Rosemarie Fleisher – 24 hcp - was the star and she nearly needed a trolley for all her winnings, literally cleaning up all the trophies in that division. To her credit, Rosemarie posted 2 great rounds of 98 and 100 gross. Very steady and very well done!
Division D's main trophies were won by locals from the region, with Paula Clark from Ocean Grove GC winning the best 36 nett and Steffi Bates from Anglesea GC receiving the trophy for best 36 nett.
Presentations took place at Barwon Heads GC with over 80 players cheering the winners and saying their good byes and thank you's to Ellie Stawell, a dedicated volunteer - for over 6 years Ellie has shared her passion and knowledge for the game with all the players assisting with many different aspects of the tournaments area. Ellie, well known for being able to have a good laugh with players, was also the golf administrator and rules official that they respected and admired for her dedication to women's golf in the state. Best of luck to Ellie in her future endeavours - she'll be greatly missed!
Neangar Park and Belvoir Park are the clubs hosting this fun tournament in 2012 and players already can't wait! Golf may be the reason to go but, in the end, it is the friendships and good times players have that makes these events so special!...the good news is that now it's only 364 days to the next one!!!

Day 1
The field was divided into 4 divisions. A and B divisions played at Lonsdale today with C and D divisions at Barwon Heads. Winds prevailed all day with the afternoon players also having to cope with some heavy showers. So, it had to be locals who were accustomed to the windy conditions that managed to post some of the best scores. Sandy Stewart (Div A) from Portland GC took an early lead in the chase of the Ruby McKenzie trophy (best 36 hole gross) with a comfortable 79. Helen Stewart (Div B) from Anglesea GC took the lead in the Vi Teesdale (best 36 nett) finishing her opening round with a 69 nett. Helen's closest competitor comes from Div. C – Joan Ryan from Rich River GC with a very good 71 nett.
Without a doubt it was a tough golf test for the players. Tomorrow the challenge continues with players having to swap courses. The weather forecast is not looking much better so let's hope the players have a good rest to fight the weather and the unfamiliar courses.
Finally, the tournament dinner took place at the beautiful Barwon Head Clubhouse and those who attended were up for a treat with a delicious carvery and plenty of desserts to be enjoyed by all (…and deserved by all!!!).
