Country Championship

Day 5 - Country Championship - Finals

Sue Wooster birdied the first hole of this 18 hole match to start her round in great fashion and an excellent approach into the second hole gave her an early advantage. However, Sienna was prepared to step up to the challenge and quickly levelled the match by playing her best golf. The match was up and down all morning with Sue having the advantage most of the time but only by one or two holes at any time. Sienna played some spectacular shots and her caddy's advise was very helpful putting Sue under pressure towards the end of the round. However, over the last few holes, Sue’s precise approaches, good putting and caddy support, by her own admission, got her over the line to win the match 2 Up! The spectators were, once again, delighted to see some great shots being played and the sunshine right through the week was welcomed by all! Once again, a huge thank you to Tocumwal Golf Club for hosting this event and helping GV staff and volunteers to run it so smoothly. Match Play Draw.

DAY 5

Day 4 - Country Championship - 1/4 and Semifinals

Spectators were treated to fantastic golf all day! After some dominating performances during the quarter finals in the morning, the players steped up a notch for the semi-finals of the Championship. The battle between #1 qualifier, Sue Wooster and #5 qualifier Britney Mueck was tough from the get go! Long drives from Britney - as long as 280 metres! - allowed her to make some early birdies in the match to put Sue under pressure. Sue’s precision shooting and steadiness however allowed her back in the match after 12 holes. Sue won the next 3 holes making the match dormie but a loss of concentration on the 16th hole allowed Britney back in the match briefly. The match concluded on the 17th hole with Sue sinking a 30 foot down-hill putt for birdie while Britney didn’t have the chance to convert her birdie putt from 3 feet which was conceded. Great match!

The pressure of friends playing against each other was felt by Sienna Lambert, #2 qualifier and Catherine Odgers, #6 qualifier, who faced each other for a spot a in the final. Sienna was 2 up after 4 holes and exceptionally good golf with many birdies saw Sienna maintain her advantage. After winning the 10th hole to go 3 up, and by her own admission a lapse of concentration over the next few holes allowed Catherine to reduce her losses to be only 1 hole behind. Sienna refocussed in a timely manner to win the 14th and 16th to close the match 3/2 with an amazing 40 foot birdie putt! Congratulations to all players for their great effort!

The final match will commence tomorrow at 8:30 am on the President’s course.

Will Sue defend her title successfully? Or will Sienna, who will soon start her traineeship and is one the country Victoria's favorite players, finish her amateur career on a high? We can guarantee though, that they will putting all their golf skills to the test! Match Play Draw

Day 3 - Glenelg Cup

The Glenelg Cup competition was fierce. Rosalie Leake (Beaconhills GC)was leading after round 1 and she backed up her 67 nett with a 75 today. But Anna Castles (Yarrawonga and Border GC) and Denise Mulcahy (Mafra GC) had other plans!!! They attacked today and came home with strong nett scores of 68 and 69 respectively. Anna is the Glenelg Cup Winner and Denise snatched the Runner Up position on a count back over Rosalie Leake. Anna also won the Best 36 hole gross. Best 18 hole nett for today’s round was taken by Ann Stokes (Anglesea GC). Congratulations to all of them!

Last night the Tournament Dinner was enjoyed by all with a special presentation being done to the Country Volunteer of the year, Joy Kelly. There was also a band playing music - not to be wasted of course…and the women were up and dancing in no time! Tonite, singing voices will be tested on a fun Karaoke night hosted Tocumwal’s CEO – Steve Williams. Thank you, Steve. And while Glenelg Cup players can now rest, at least 8 players will have an early night with the Championship continuing tomorrow at 8:00 am on the Captain’s course. Best luck to all of them! Day 3 - Country Champioships

The weather was as good or better than the previous 2 days and the scores from the Championship field who played the Captain’s course followed suit - 4 players having scores in the 70s. Seven out of the 8 places for the Match Play were clear cut. However, Adele Huggard (Port Arlington GC), Ann Walker (Wonthaggi GC) and Kathy Bell (13th Beach GC) found themselves in a tricky play off situation. Kathy won her place on the first playoff hole with a great up and down from the bunker. Well done Kathy! To see all results from the Championship qualifying rounds click here.

The top 8 qualifiers then are:

1. Sue Wooster (149)

2. Sienna Lambert (154)

3. Angela Dunn (155)

4. Judy Langford (160)

5. Britney Mueck (161)

6. Catherine Odgers (162)

7. Yoyo Han (168)

8. Kathy Bell (169)

Day 2 - Country Champioships & Glenelg Cup

Day 1 of this massive golf week finished with a fantastic cocktail party generously hosted by Tocumwal Golf Club. The trophies for the Victorian Country Foursomes were also presented at this function. Today, an early start and perfect weather made conditions very favourable for scoring. The President’s course was the test for the Championship field (handicap 0-18) and it proved to be very challenging with Sue Wooster the only player to break the 80 barrier. Angela Dunn (Flinders GC) and Sienna Lambert (Cohuna GC) are her closest competitors, 6 shots behind.

The Glenelg Cup rewards the best nett over 36 with women between 19-35 handicap competing for this title. The first day scores are important to set these players up with a chance to win this traditional trophy. The leader at the moment is Rosalie Leake (Beaconhills GC – Hcp 26) with a nett score of 67. Rosalie is being closely followed by Sandra Bozzola (Yarrawonga & Border GC – Hcp 22) and a nett of 68. With more lovely weather forecast and the courses in pristine condition, we can only expect great results!

These events are packed with fun activities – at the end of Day 2 we will enjoy the "famous” tournament dinner…maybe just another excuse to catch up with old friends, have a good laugh and a few drinks…so just remember it is all about having fun not just about the golf!

Day 1 - Victorian Country Foursomes

The 2011 Victorian Country Foursomes was fiercely contested with some great combinations coming from all over Victoria. Judy Langford (Yarrawonga and Border GC) and her partner Sara Hagy (Howlong GC) were joint winners in 2010 but weren’t willing to share the title this year! Playing off a combined handicap of 3, they backed up an average morning round on the President’s course with an excellent afternoon round on the Captain’s course. That round of 72 (one under par) helped them successfully defending their title! Congratulations on their back to back championships! With this fantastic score they also were the deserving winners of the Best 18 hole Nett for round 2 as well as the Best 36 hole Nett score (150 nett) on a count back over Howlong members Glenda Hosking and Sue Eisenahuer and Moe members Gwen Young and Karen Bays. Great effort by all of them!

Glenda Hosking and Sue Eisenhauer did manage to win one of the two remaining trophies - they were the overall Runners Up, completing the 36 holes in 163 strokes. Well done! Finally the Best 18 hole Nett in the morning was won by Helen Dennett (Kilmore GC) and Liz Hendy (Clifton Springs GC) with 72 Nett. Please click here for all results and for the trophy presentation list.

Expectations are high for the next 2 days with 80 players competing for the Victorian Country Champion’s title and 125 players fighting for the prestigious Glenelg Cup. With weather forecast to be as good as today, one thing that is guaranteed is that everyone will be enjoying Tocumwal to the max!
