Yarrawonga teenager Breanna Elliott continued her domination of the Victorian Country Championship with a resounding victory in the final at Rich River Golf Club.

In an all Yarrawonga final in windy conditions, Breanna managed to hold out 2008 defending titleholder Judy Langford to win the prestigious title 4/3.

"I'm really excited about the win ... it means that my golf is going in the right direction and all of the work I've doing on it in the past 3 years is starting to pay off," Breanna admitted.

"I probably played better over the past few days but conditions were more difficult today with the wind," the affable youngster said.

Breanna capped off a fabulous week in which she broke the course record in the first round of qualifying with a 1-under par 71, backed it up with a 72 to qualify No.1 then trounced her quarter and semi final opponents Helen Pascoe and June Tickell respectively.

Howver Judy Langford will not leave the tournament disappointed after winning the Victorian Foursomes Championship with her partner Liz Cussens on Monday.

About

The Country Championship of Victoria was first played in 1910. This event is extremely popular with country golfers.

The Country Championship is a week long tournament including the Country Championship, Glenelg Cup, Marion Dwyer Country Foursomes, and Stableford Competition.

Country Championship

The Country Championship is open to golfers holding a playing membership with an affiliated WGV country golf club. The event is played with two 18 hole qualifying rounds of strokeplay, followed by knock-out matchplay between the eight highest qualifiers. The winner holds the Country Championship Cup for one year. The player with the best Gross score over 36 holes holds the Betty Kernot Trophy, a gift from the South Western District Golf Association.

Miss Betty Kernot has a remarkable record as a player and club official. A member of Geelong Golf Club from 1923, she was made a Life Member in 1939 and was President from 1952 - 1956. As a player she won the Club Championship 13 times, Australian Championship twice and was runner up once.

Miss Kernot represented Victoria on many occasions in the interstate teams and Australia for the Tasman Cup. The South Western District Golf Association presented the trophy to commemorate Miss Kernot's great contribution.

The Glenelg Cup was first played in 1953 and was open to country players with handicaps between 19 - 25. WGV has since extended the handicap range to 35. The trophy was donated by Mrs. A Nash.
