Australian Amateur Championship

The 2011 Australian Women’s Strokeplay championship was played at Huntingdale Golf Club last week. A Strong Victorian contingent was vying for the stroke-play title which ultimately saw New Zealand’s Lydia Ko win in a play-off from the Riversdale Cup Champion Cecillia Cho(NZ) in the 72 hole championship. Both players finished at -6 for the tournament seven shots ahead of Minjee Lee(WA) who finished in third place at +1(77,67,74&75).

The top 32 players from the stroke play qualified for the match-play event which was played at Victoria Golf Club.  The leading Victorian was Breanna Elliot who recently returned from India where she was representing Australia. Elliot managed rounds of 77,73,76 and 72(+6) to finish in a tie for 7th position. Elliot defeated Ellen Davies-Graham (Qld) 2 & 1 in the 1st round but was defeated 3&2 by Ebony Heard (SA) in the second round.

Current state squad member Sue Wooster shot rounds of 83,74,78 and 79 in the stroke play and qualified in 28th position but was unfortunately knocked out in the first round of the match-play against Cathleen Santoso(NSW) who qualified in 5th position.  Courtney Gay also a state squad member was the 29th qualifier and managed a tight first round win on the 19th hole to defeat her Taipei opponent but was knocked out by the 72 hole Victorian Stroke play runner-up Jessica Speechley(WA).

Grace Lennon qualified in 27th position with rounds of 78, 80, 76 and 79 but was unfortunately defeated by Su-Hyun Oh in the first round of the match-play. Victorian based Oh won the first round match 4&3 and managed to navigate her way into the quarter final where she was eventually defeated 5&4 by the eventual runner-up; 14-year-old Minjee Lee(WA).

Ashlee Dewhurst (Tas) who qualified in 9th position played Minjee Lee (WA) in the 36 hole final. Dewhurst who was 1up against Lee going down the 36th hole, three putted to lose the hole and send the match into sudden death.  Both players birdied the 37th hole but it was Dewhurst who prevailed by paring the 38th hole and complete victory. Dewhurst gains exemption into the 2012 Women’s Australian Open with her victory.

The fund has been separated into three funding streams. The first is for small grants of up to $5k that clubs / community groups are able to apply for. The second stream of funding is an initial upfront contribution of $50k to Councils to assist with the initial repair / reinstatement of infrastructure. Affected clubs may wish to get in touch with their local Council with any proposals that they have on how this funding could be used.

he remaining funding is a negotiated stream, where larger infrastructure repair / replacement projects can be funded. Sport and Recreation Victoria (SRV) will continue to work with councils and State Sporting Associations to identify projects under this stream.

Should you have any queries about the above information please feel free to contact Sport and Recreation Victoria contacts, Ricky Bell on 9208 3455 or Tatiana Lunn on 9208 3459.

Flood Damage Reports to Golf Victoria

Golf Vitoria is also seeking feedback from clubs as to the level of flood damage sustained to course, clubhouse and/or equipment. Already a number of clubs have provided details of this nature. Accordingly it would be appreciated if clubs that have sustained significant flood damage could advise the following: -

- Description of the Flood Damage Sustained.
- Cost Approximation of the Damage.
- Description of requirements to recover from the situation.
- Indication as to whether the damage is covered by insurance.
- Indication as to whether grant relief has been achieved via another source.

It would be appreciated if the above details be provided to Golf Victoria by Friday April 8th. While a brief summary form is attached for this purpose, clubs are able to submit a copy of any grant application already completed and/or extended descriptions of flood damage including images.

Volunteer program delivers an outstanding result at Commonwealth Golf Club

Wednesday 31 March 2010

Five Hundred volunteers coordinated by Women's Golf Victoria (WGV) worked closely with Golf Australia to deliver a wonderful women's event at Commonwealth Golf Club on the Melbourne sandbelt from the 11th to 14th of March 2010.

WGV once again provided the workforce for this prestigious women's golf tournament, for the third year in a row. The project involves many months of planning and preparation, working closely with the Golf Australia team and the host club team headed up this year by Peter Parks, General Manager at Commonwealth Golf Club.

Initial registrations opened in September 2009 and first rosters were created in December by Louise MacDonald and Karen White from WGV.  Many changes occurred in the ensuing months including a re-scheduling of the event from February to March to avoid a clash with another international women's event.

The first volunteers to commence their roles were the Courtesy Car drivers, ably lead by Liz Thynne from Cohuna, who started on the Sunday prior; to collect players from the airport and transport them safely to their accommodation.  The drivers also ferried the players and other officials from their accommodation to the course each day and were the last ones to finish, more than 24 hours after the event had concluded.

Mrs. Patricia Bridges (The winner of the Women's Australia Open plays for the Patricia Bridges Bowl) kindly acknowledged the important role of the courtesy car driver's in a hand written note to Liz Thynne at the conclusion of the event. "...You are incredible in managing the task of moving everyone in whatever direction necessary.  Some would be casual in acknowledging your help, and all the efforts of your wonderful team, but you should all know it is a facility which contributes tremendously to the whole profile of the Women's Open, and the event depends greatly on your band of volunteers."

The pace picked up by mid week of the Open with Karen White heading up the team leaders in volunteer HQ as they prepared for the arrival of the five hundred volunteers required to work across the four days of the tournament. Team Leaders were in the main women that have sat or currently sit on the WGV Board or a WGV Committee and have a depth of knowledge of golf and are also very well organised!

Ann Felgate, WGV Treasurer took on the mammoth task of Chief Marshall ensuring seamless communication across all teams and volunteers who were out on course either, marshalling, scoring, updating leader boards or scoreboard carrying, filling up drink stations, as well as the myriad of other tasks required to deliver a professional and enjoyable event.

Overseen by Karen White and Bronwen Young, everything ran like clock-work in Volunteer HQ.   On the odd occasion when we experienced a gap in the rosters, there was always a helpful volunteer willing to step up and take on another shift, rather than go and watch the fantastic golf or just go home and put their feet up!

At the conclusion of play on the Sunday afternoon, Golf Australia hosted a thank you BBQ for all volunteers and there was much delight when Yani Tseng and Stephen Pitt (CEO Golf Australia) visited to thank the volunteers for a job well done. Yani spent time signing autographs with photo opportunities before attending the Champions Cocktail party to celebrate her impressive win.

WGV also received wonderful feedback from the Whitaker family regarding the volunteer program. (Alison is the current Victorian Amateur Champion).  "...our daughter Alison Whitaker played in the tournament this week. Alison is a local who belongs to Victoria Golf Club but is on a golf scholarship at Duke University...Alison encouraged her peers from the US and Europe to attend the WAO...knowing that once they had made the huge flight they would love it." Feedback from one of Alison?s friends Amanda Blumenhurst as told to Alison?s mother Kerry is as follows:  "Amanda did not have a good tournament with respect to her scores.  She did however have a great tournament and attributed that to how warmly welcomed she had been and how great the volunteers had been with courtesy cars, directions and general encouragement...The experience for her has been quite unique and the warmth and generosity shown to her and her caddie, Uncle Bill, was greatly appreciated.

"Alison was so proud to be a part of this tournament and this experience for her friends.  For all of those volunteers who were up early and those who gave their time so generously, please let them know that it did not pass unnoticed."  Kerry Whitaker.

To all the volunteers and the fabulous and hard working team leaders, thank you from the WGV Board, Committees and Administration Team for a job very well done.  We know we can't do it without you and we hope you enjoy the experience as much as we do.

We look forward to seeing you all again in 2011 somewhere on the Sandbelt in Melbourne!

Members enjoy a day at Victoria GC

Monday 30 March 2010

Thirty women from all around Victoria participated in a one day golf clinic at Victoria GC yesterday. Five professionals coached groups of six women who were divided into their groups according to handicaps which ranged from 7-45.

Groups rotated between putting, chipping/bunkers, wedge play & trouble shots and also were involved in an on course session earlier in the day.

Thank you to Victoria GC for allowing WGV the use of your fantastic facilities and the catering which was provided throughout the day.

Players Perform for Pennant

Monday 29 March 2010

Metropolitan Pennant launched into it's second round Sunday morning with Victoria, Riversdale, Rossdale, Northern and Waverly hosting the day of competition. Whilst day-light saving did mean that the ladies were teeing off before the sun had greeted the day, the soft light and warm weather made for a serene atmosphere.

Section one proved to be a battle between club teams with Kingston Heath and Southern wining out on the day 4/3. Unfortunately Victoria could not use their home club to their advantage and sadly went down 6/1 whilst Heidelberg had the upper hand over Long Island 5/2.

In section two Woodlands and Rosanna had a convincing win, despite some terrific efforts from their opposing teams. Kew and Huntingdale also walked away with a win against Cranbourne and Eastwood respectively.

Section three saw a number of games been played past the 18th hole. Unfortunately this effort was not enough to secure a win for Rossdale, who went down to Spring Valley. Keysborough came out strongly defeating Latrobe, whilst Sunshine defeated Patterson River. Kingswood also managed to walk away with a win, despite two games going to Peninsula.

Despite their best efforts The Heritage and Box Hill were unable to pull of a win against the Eastern and Croydon respectively. Greenacres and Medway battled it out on the course, with Green Acres just managing to pull away for the win 4/3.

Finally section five is turning out to be highly competitive with the teams regularly having close games, with the defeated player only going down by the narrowest of margins. Sandhurst proved to be too strong on the day for Waverley, whilst Cheltenham managed to defeat Sanctuary Lakes. A tough battled was played out between Kooringal and Amstel, with the latter managing to take the win 4/3.

Thank you to all clubs that hosted this weeks round of Pennant and special thanks to all helpers on the day, your efforts do not go unnoticed.

Friday's No Match for the Ladies of Matchplay

Friday 26 March 2010

Today saw five Victorian Golf Clubs host the first round of the Metropolitan Matchplay. The new competition started on a good note with great weather and ladies eager to get out on the golf course and battle it out to regain top spot in each of their divisions.

Metropolitan Matchplay is a newly formed competition played on the Friday, after Metropolitan Pennant moved to the new day of Sunday. The competition is split into five divisions, each with a number of six to eight golf clubs participating within.

Having the pleasure of viewing division three's matches hosted at the lovely Keysborough Golf Club, it was easy to observe the intensity of the competition. Gathered round the scoreboard, the ladies were carefully studying the scores of the first 9 holes. The competition was tight, and it could be seen that every shot played was been scrutinized by not only the players and teams, but the small gathering of spectators that had come out for the day.

Other clubs also got to enjoy a great day on course, and whilst the sun streamed down on the players some fantastic golf was played. At Kew Golf Club, the hosting team had the upper-hand, with Commonwealth, Royal Melbourne and Huntingdale wining their game.

Division Two played at the serene Heidelberg Golf Club, saw again the hosting team use their home club knowledge to their advantage and walk away with a win. Rosanna, Long Island and Latrobe also proved to be too strong on the day of competition and whilst a fight was put up by the opposing teams, it was not enough for victory.

Patterson River hosted for Division Five, and whilst their team had a bye, fantastic golf was played on course. Sandhurst and Northern battled it out, and whilst the games were extremely close, Northern managed to get ahead, pulling off a win 4/3. The Heritage and Kooringal also displayed some fantastic golf, with both their opposing teams, playing some remarkable golf, and only going down by the closest of game points.

Yarra Valley hosted Division Five for round one, with the competition there looking quite spirited. Yarra Valley managed achieved a win on their home turf, whilst Eastern managed to just pip Centenary Park. Box Hill and Rossdale were also fortunate to come away with a win. Well done to the ladies, who teed off quite late in the afternoon and played well up to 6 o'clock.

A fantastic effort by all teams involved, congratulations to those that walked away with a win, and better luck next time to those that just missed out. A big thank you must go out to all hosting clubs and the numerous helpers on the day.

Sunday Pennant Begins Successfully

Monday 22 March 2010

The first round of Metropolitan Pennant commenecd yesterday signifying the begining of a new era for Women's Pennant in Victoria.

Whilst many Victorian's view Sunday morning as the 'sleep in day', the ladies in Pennant were out the door and teeing off before daylight had fully come about.

With five sections within the Sunday Pennant competition, great golf could be viewed from a number of golf clubs; from Rosanna to Southern, across to Amstel and the Peninsula, and up at The Heritage. The ladies had a perfect day, weather wise, for the competition with little breeze early on.

Whilst some teams were fortunate enough to have a convincing win on the day, other team scores revealed a battle was on hand, with team mates playing up to the 21st hole, only to just miss out, going down  4/3.  Once the ladder scores were entered it could easily be seen that there is some tight competition within some of the sections, which should prove interesting to watch in the coming weeks.

On another note, following the first day of Pennant a number of positive comments were made regarding the competition, to some of our committee members who were out and about in the field as players and caddies. Many ladies were thankful for the opportunity to play as it no longer clashed with work, whilst other clubs enjoyed the opportunity to play the younger up and coming talent in their team. Regardless, it looks like overall all ladies enjoyed the day of golf and socialising with other club members and look forward to the next week of competition.

Southern Shines For Bronze Teams

Wednesday 17 March 2010

The Long Island ladies team narrowly defeated Royal Melbourne on Monday to take the title of Best Combined Stableford for 2010.

With one point separating winner and runner-up, Long Island with a score of 98 points managed to prevail over Royal Melbourne (97) to take this year's title for Bronze Team Winner.

Played on the sensational course that is the Southern Golf Club, the 50 team field began a fun-filled day of laughs, tears, triumphs and challenges in the name of golf. With the competitors divided into morning and afternoon fields, fantastic golf could be seen throughout the day.

Early on it was evident that a battle was on hand with many of the competitors' scores in close range to one another. With the morning ladies finished and mingling over lunch, the morning results were tallied. Elizabeth Poort from Long Island stood out from the rest and took the morning field title for Best Stableford Score of 38 points (H'cap 22).

Whilst some ladies in the afternoon found the course a slight challenge, requiring the use of their sand wedge on more than one occasion, only smiles could be seen from all those that participated. The afternoon field finished up in the evening, and while the ladies discussed their triumphs and tribulations from the day the scores were counted.

With a score of 98 Long Island were claimed the winners of the day thanks to some high-quality golf being played by team members Elizabeth Poort, Helen Treacy and Cheryle Jenkins. Runners-up were Royal Melbourne with a score of 97, by Bonnie Robson, Chrisse Hood and Jenny Clegl.

Best Stableford Score for the afternoon field was taken by Tina O'Brien of Box Hill, with Handicap of 35 and score of 40 points.

Congratulations to all winners on the day and a big thank you to all the players who participated in the tournament and made the day such an enjoyable one for all involved.

Special thanks to Southern Golf Club's Ladies President Judith Giraud and Ladies Captain Irene Wyld for all their help on the day and prior to. Recognition must also be given out to committee members Lee Wills, Dawn Nagel and Nicki Charman for their tireless effort on day.

Ladies Grace Long Island for Successful Day

Monday 22 February 2010

On Monday 22nd February Long Island Golf Club hosted the first round of the State Stableford Series for Women's Golf Victoria. With a turn out of thirty-three competitors, the field was well beyond the expectations of WGV.

With a starting time of 8.30am, the ladies were off tackling the difficult course that lay before them. A drive around the course half way through the 18 holes was meet with smiles all around and a few searches for lost balls. There were some terrific shots played on the day, with some ladies fortunate enough to obtain amble practice time in the bunkers.

Despite the difficulty of the course, the day was played under clear blue sky and barley a puff of wind. Having completed their 18 holes, the ladies had nothing but praise for the layout and challenge of the course. Whilst the rest of the field finished up, those fortunate enough to tee off early were able to enjoy lunch in the club house, with Vice-President Lee Wills keeping us entertained with many of her well known jokes.

As the sea winds rolled in, the last group completed their round and retired to the clubhouse. With a well deserved thank-you to the hosting club and volunteers on the day, the prize winners were announced.  Maureen Platt from Morack Ladies, (H'cap of 33) claimed the title of winner of round one with a score of 35. Runner-up was given to Robyn Owens (Long Island) with an H'cap of 33 and a score of 34C/B. Best 9 out was given to Jenny Bowman (Long Island) with a score of 19, whilst Runner-up winner Robyn Owens also took out Best 9 in, with a score of 24.

Congratulations to all competitors who made the effort to come down for the day and start the new event off with a bang! A big thank-you must be given to the Long Island Club for hosting the event, Ladies President Pamela Lambert, Lady Captain Susan Cripps and a number of other Long Island members whose assistance was greatly appreciated. Thank-you must also be given to Match Committee member Dawn Nagel and Vice-President Lee Wills for their efforts on the day.

Stacey Keating Takes the Title at Keysborough Golf Club

Friday 19 February 2010

This year's Victorian 72 Hole Stroke-play Championship has been won by local girl Stacey Keating from Victoria Golf Club. With a 72 hole score of 285, Keating narrowly obtained victory over fellow competitor Justine Lee (The Australian) by one stroke. Remaining consistent throughout the four day tournament, Keating not only produced a solid performance but set a new course record of 68 in round three at the Keysborough course.

The Victorian 72 Hole Strokeplay Championships is one of WGV's biggest tournaments in the Calender year, with competitors across the country descending onto the golf course to battle it out for the title. Playing four consecutive stroke rounds, the Championship attracts a first-class field and this year was no exception. With a talent pool of 67 competitors, the field included players from interstate, the Golf Australia National Squad, the China Elite Squad and members from within the state. Hosting the four day tournament this year was Keysborough Golf Club.

Under what can only be described as near-perfect weather, the first day began with ease, with all competitors settling in nicely, and some fantastic strokes being exhibited on course. Round one completed, it was evident that a battle was on hand, with nearly half the field within ten strokes of the leader, Jessica Speechly (Lake Karrnyup) on 71.

Day two proved just as exciting, with Breanna Elliott (Yarrawonga/Border) finishing on top for Best Gross Score for the second round and setting the new club record of 69. A 36 hole count of 145 placed Young Jin Chi (Sandhurst) and Ebony Heard (Kooyonga) in the lead, with the rest of the field hot their tail, one stroke the difference between the top five on the leader board.

Round Three saw the field reduce to only the top 36 competitors. The struggle for top score continued with the girls producing some magnificent shots on the green. Stacey Keating (Victoria) finished on top for best score of the day and also set a new course record of 68. The 54 hole count showed that three competitors were beginning to break away from the main group, with Keating, Heard and Lee holding top places respectively, and separated by only one stroke each way.

The final day proved to be an exciting one, with all players displaying great enthusiasm and skill. However, when the final scores were tallied, Keating with a handicap of +2 took the title of Victorian 72 Hole Strokeplay Champion with a score of 285. Runner-up was taken by Justine Lee (+2) with a score of 286.  Congratulations to the girls and all prize winners for a sensational tournament.

Special thanks to Keysborough Golf Club, Ellie Stawell, Helen Brown, Rosaleen Williams and Club Captain Maggie Cripps for all their help at the tournament.

The Women's Golf Victoria Board and the Victorian Golf Association Council have agreed on a model for amalgamation that is to be recommended to members (see below). Consultation over the model will begin in February. Over the next three months members will be asked to provide feedback on the recommended structure through meetings of WGV District Delegates, the VGA Country Conference and a series of open forums that will be held in regional centres around the state and in Melbourne, giving everyone an opportunity for input. Major Champions Head to Melbourne

(Sourced:Golf Australia February 2, 2010)

Tuesday 2 February 2010

Two of the biggest names in international women's golf will come to Melbourne from 11-14 March for the 2010 HANDA Women's Australian Open.

Swedish World Number 4 Anna Nordqvist, who completed a stunning rookie year in 2009, will be joined by Taiwan's Yani Tseng, the World Number 6, at Commonwealth Golf Club.

Nordqvist, in just her fifth start as a professional, won her first Major at the 2009 LPGA Championship at Bulle Rock Golf Club, defeating Australia's Lindsey Wright by four strokes.

Not satisfied with a Major win in her rookie year, Nordqvist won the LPGA Tour Championship presented by Rolex to complete a year which began with her win at the Ladies European Tour Qualifying School in Spain.

She was named 2009 Ladies European Tour Rookie of the Year for her performances.

Coincidentally, Yani Tseng's first Major victory also came at Bulle Rock Golf Club at the LPGA Championship in 2008.

Tseng won the LPGA Corning Classic title in 2009 and in 2008 finished runner-up at the Ricoh Women's British Open before being named LPGA Rookie of the Year.

In March 2009, Tseng became the fastest player in LPGA Tour history to reach the US$2 million mark in career earnings.

Nordqvist and Tseng join four-time champion Karrie Webb AM and two-time champion Laura Davies CBE in what is shaping as the finest field in the championship's history.

CEO Stephen Pitt said Golf Australia was looking forward to welcoming two of the world's top 10 women to Melbourne.

"We're very pleased to have players of the calibre of Anna and Yani join us at Commonwealth Golf Club," Pitt said.

"At just 22 and 21 years of age respectively, these two women have made stunning starts to their professional careers which is reflected by their world ranking and we're thrilled that fans will be able to see these talents live on Melbourne's sand-belt," Pitt said.

The 2010 HANDA Women's Australian Open is held from 11-14 March at Commonwealth Golf Club.

A FIRST for the APS Old Boys and for Woodlands Golf Club!

Friday 6 November 2009

Grace Daniell, as an Old Boy/Girl of Hailebury won the prestigious Singles Championship of the APS (Associated Public Schools) Old Boys Association at Royal Melbourne on Friday 30th October and followed it up with a win in the Woodlands Club Championship on Sunday 1st November.

The APS Cup, was first presented in 1927 by Geo. E. Dickenson Esq. to the winner Mr L G Jackson, then follows seven appearances for seven wins by none other than Ivo Whitton. Other luminaries whose names appear on the cup include D. Haig, T. Crow, P. Maloney and B. Langford-Jones, such great company for Grace to find herself included amongst, and the first woman to appear on the cup in its 82 year history.

The Singles Championship was contested by 249 Old Boys (with 3 Old Girls participating), with Grace winning with a fine score of 76!

The Woodlands Championship was contested over 36 holes between seven times winner in the past nine years, Tara Shimmin and 19 year old Grace. Tara, with husband Peter caddying, was watched closely by their 13 month old son Reilly, (a future champion?). It was outstanding golf to watch and a great reminder to us all of the importance of dedication to your sport.

Sometimes we sit glued to our televisions watching some amazing golf being played by professionals, when we can see equally remarkably golf being played in our Club Championships. Well done Grace!

AUSTRALIAN WOMEN'S INTERSTATE TEAMS MATCHES, ROUND 1

Tuesday 22 September 2009

The Queensland Women's Team roared into first place with a superb performance on the opening day of the Australian Women's Interstate Teams Matches at Peninsula Country Golf Club in Victoria.

Ashley Ona, fresh from being crowned the Australian Girls Amateur Champion in Alice Springs in mid-year, partnered with Bree Arthur for a 3&1 win against Tasmanian top pair Ashlee Dewhurst and Sarah Johnstone.

Ona backed up her performance in the foursomes with a resounding 7&5 win in the singles. Courtney Massey and Ash McCourt added comfortable wins to help Queensland to a 6-2 victory in the opening contest and top spot on the leaderboard.

Western Australia are within touching distance after a 5 ½ to 2 ½ win over South Australia. Emma Ash?s solid 8&6 win in the singles was not enough for the South Australians as WA restricted them to half a point in the morning foursomes.

New South Wales won the day's other contest as they went head to head with fierce rivals Victoria. Results were shared in the foursomes as Victorians Stacey Keating and Tilly Poulsen were too good for Allyce Watkinson and Srixon Australian Amateur champion Justine Lee, winning 3&1. A 4 ½ to 1 ½ performance in the singles was enough to seal the opening day win.

AUSTRALIAN MEN'S INTERSTATE TEAMS MATCHES, ROUND 1

Victoria began its campaign for a second successive Australian Men's Interstate Teams Matches title with an impressive 7-4 win over close rivals New South Wales. After an even foursomes display, Srixon Australian Stroke Play champion Bryden Macpherson and Daniel Beckmann helped the Victorians to good opening round win with tight victories in the singles.

South Australia lie in second place after a 6 ½ to 4 ½ win over Western Australia. A 3-1 lead from the foursomes helped the South Australians to a commanding position but WA battled back to claim valuable points. Golf Australia National Squad member Jordan Sherratt was among the best- winning both his matches.

Tasmania and Queensland fought out the closest battle with a narrow 6-5 win to Tasmania. 5&4 wins to both Craig Hancock and Kalem Richardson eased Tasmania past their northern opponents.

AUSTRALIAN COLTS INTERSTATE TEAMS MATCHES, ROUND 1

The action could not have been closer in the opening round of the Australian Men's Interstate Colts Teams Matches at Keysborough Golf Club.

Queensland lead by just one match after a late fightback from Tasmania kept all States in the hunt after the opening day's play. Lead by good performances from Eagle Chang, Kris O'Sullivan and Kevin Marques, the Queenslanders won both the foursomes and their singles battle.

Victoria sits second after a hard-fought win over New South Wales. Daniel Popovic won both his matches for Victoria.

South Australia and Western Australia battled it out for a squared contest and there is all to play for in tomorrow?s second round.

History repeats at Hamilton Golf Club

Thursday 14 August 2009

The 1959 Hamilton Golf Club Ladies Championship was won by Gwen Satchell with Athlea Archer runner up. This year, fifty years on, the Championship was won by Athlea Archer!

Following close behind in her grandmother Gwen's footsteps, was Lyn Crow. Ninety six year-old Gwen Satchell, was standing on the sidelines supporting her granddaughter - Lyn Crow. A bit of DejaVu you may say with a Satchell family member and Athlea Archer playing off in the final!

"We both played good golf, we didn't make many mistakes. She got a couple of long putts on me" Crow said

Archer told the Hamilton Spectator Newspaper "Gwen was a great player in her day. She won twice. Lyn hasn't won yet, it was her first final. She has been playing a while and she is looking very promising and I have no doubt she will be a champion one day!"

Gwen stopped playing golf about seven years ago, just before Lyn started to play. Crow said it was lovely to have her 'nanna' by her side supporting her game. "I wish I had of been able to play with her. It's one of my regrets. She is very positive and encourages me a lot"

Congratulations Athlea Archer for winning her 12th A grade ladies title and bringing back some history and memories to the game!

2009 Burtta Cheney Anglesea Girls' Golf Camp

Monday 6 July 2009

This year over 90 girls participated in the Burtta Cheney Anglesea Girls Golf Camps.

Two camps were held:

3 Day Camp           28-30 June             9-13 year olds
4 Day Camp            30 June-3 July        14-17 year olds

The 4 day camp participants were not so lucky, faced with torrential rain and wind, however that didn't deter the girls from continuing in horrendous weather. The girls still managed to have fun and further develop their golf despite the conditioins.

The Kangaroo Trophy held on the first day of camp, saw Tilly Poulson (3) from Kingston Heath win the overall gross on a count back with the defending champion Rachel Korevaar (5) from Queens Park.

Kids revel in Tri Golf

Tuesday 24 June 2009

Hundreds of kids have discovered just how cool golf can be with thanks to "Tri Golf", a joint initiative between Women's Golf Victoria(WGV), Stuart Appleby Junior Golf(SAJG), and funded by the Victorian Government through Sport and Recreation Victoria.

In recent weeks at clubs across Victoria, girls and boys aged 6 to 12 years have been taking part in 'Tri Golf', a three-tiered golf learning program that gives children an introduction to basic skills, supports them in moving onto the golf course, and encourages their ongoing participation.

'Tri Golf' comprises: 1) a learning phase 2) an on-course phase, and 3) a competition phase. Its success is not necessarily its program structure, but the innovative way in which it's being delivered. "We engage the children's imagination through fun games that cleverly develop the skills appropriate in learning the basics of golf technique" says Ashley Marshall, SAJG Manager.

"Tri Golf is effective in getting children to have fun in golf, building their confidence and supporting them to play a modified version of the game in its real environment."

"It's essential to recognize progress and achievement and to develop a strong social network for them to enjoy", says Marshall. "Our golf professionals are fully qualified and experienced in working with kids."

"The retention rate between phases has also been outstanding. For example at Kooringal Golf Club alone, 83 boys and girls participated in the initial learning phase, with 44 still having a ball out on the course".

The Victorian Government has backed the initiative through its State Sporting Association Support Grant Scheme, and is a committed partner in the roll-out of the project over the next two years. The initiative is helping to ensure the long term vitality of the sport of golf.

The success of Tri Golf provides an additional benefit to Women's Golf Victoria, says CEO Bronwen Young. "This project will strengthen our Girls Golf Network brand. One of WGV's key strategic goals is to position golf as the sport of choice for women and girls of all ages, and in partnering Victoria's junior golf foundation Stuart Appleby Junior Golf, and Victorian Government, we are pooling specialist resources to best achieve this outcome".

All equipment is provided and every child receives a cool Tri Golf starter pack. At a very nominal rate per session, participation is easy. Host clubs are thrilled to see so many young children getting involved, and there is an added bonus in that clubs retain the participation fee to further develop their ongoing junior activities.

Volunteers are also a key component, and persons interesting in assisting at a voluntary level regardless of their golfing skill, are encouraged to contact WGV. Similarly, in launching 'Tri Golf', WGV and SAJG welcome interest from corporate organisations to partner the project long term.

Tuesday 19 May 2009

The Nathalia Golf Club held a most successful weekend celebrating their Centenary on May 16th-17th 2009.

Players and former members returned to help celebrate the occasion. Nathalia should be very proud of their achievement of providing a sport for their community for 100 years.

Nathalia commenced in 1909 as a 9 hole sand course west of Weir Street taking in Tricarico's market garden out to Leaf's slaughter yards and back. In 1915 they moved to crown land taking in the Showgrounds and football oval. In 1956 they purchased their current site and developed an 18 hole sand course to which they moved in 1959. In the late 1980's it was decided to convert to a grass green course of 9 holes with 18 different tees which continues today.(Excerpts from Celebrating 100 years of golf in Nathalia)
